My husband, Mike, and I recently enjoyed a fantastic weekend getaway in Butler County, Ohio. Located approximately four hours from our home in the Cleveland/Akron area, it was the perfect distance for a quick escape. It’s always a refreshing change to step away from our daily routines and reconnect, especially when we can enjoy some adult-focused fun without the kids. Butler County truly exceeded our expectations, revealing itself as a destination with a surprising array of activities.
When we first began planning our itinerary, we were presented with numerous exciting options. One activity that stood out as incredibly popular in the area was skydiving. While the thrill of leaping from a plane certainly held an appeal, with three children waiting for us back home, we opted for less risky adventures this time around. Interestingly, as we were later enjoying a serene kayaking trip, we witnessed no less than four different groups skydiving overhead. It looked incredibly exhilarating, making us think twice about skipping it next time!

Culinary Journey at The Learning Kitchen
Our Butler County adventure began with an immersive Middle Eastern cooking class at The Learning Kitchen in West Chester, Ohio. As soon as I saw “Middle Eastern food” on the agenda, I knew this class was tailor-made for me. With my mother’s family hailing from Lebanon, the flavors and traditions of this cuisine hold a very special place in my heart. It wasn’t just about cooking; it was about connecting with my heritage through food.
I was particularly eager to discover variations on the beloved recipes I grew up with. It’s fascinating how Middle Eastern dishes can differ so much depending on the specific region. Our instructor, a talented chef from Jordan, promised to share authentic recipes from her background. I couldn’t wait to see the unique twists and techniques from her region compared to the Lebanese style I was familiar with. It truly highlighted the rich diversity within Middle Eastern culinary traditions.

The class kicked off with a recipe for my absolute favorite salad: Fattoush. If you’ve never had the pleasure of making or tasting Fattoush, you absolutely must add it to your culinary bucket list! It’s especially delightful during the summer months when fresh produce is at its peak, bursting with vibrant flavors and textures.

The Fattoush we prepared at The Learning Kitchen had a delightful twist: it incorporated fresh cilantro and a generous drizzle of pomegranate molasses, which added a wonderful tang and depth of flavor. These variations were a revelation, and I’ve already incorporated them into my own Fattoush recipe at home. It truly enhanced an already perfect salad.

Next, we moved on to preparing an absolutely divine pecan-harissa crusted lamb chops served with tender okra and sweet carrots. This dish was, without a doubt, one of the best lamb preparations I have ever tasted. The harissa provided a gentle warmth, perfectly complemented by the nutty crunch of pecans, creating a symphony of flavors and textures. I am already planning to recreate this masterpiece and might even share a variation of the recipe here, so keep an eye out!

The Learning Kitchen provides an incredibly enriching environment for honing your culinary prowess. Our instructor’s deep knowledge and authentic approach made the experience not just educational, but genuinely delightful. If you’re seeking a fun, interactive, and delicious way to kick off your visit to Butler County, Ohio, I highly recommend checking them out. You’ll leave with new skills, a satisfied stomach, and a deeper appreciation for diverse cuisines.

Indulging in the Butler County Donut Trail
The following day, Mike and I embarked on a sugary quest along the renowned Butler County Donut Trail. This unique trail features ten local bakeries, each offering their own irresistible specialties. We managed to sample three of these delightful establishments: Mimi’s Donuts & Bakery, Kelly’s Bakery, and Jupiter Coffee & Donuts. If you consider yourself a donut enthusiast, adding this trail to your itinerary is an absolute must-do.

We truly ate our weight in donuts, savoring every single bite. Each bakery offered something distinct, from classic glazed to creatively adorned confections. The variety was truly fantastic, showcasing both timeless favorites and unique, innovative flavors, such as the memorable Oreo donut we sampled. The Donut Trail is more than just a food tour; it’s a delightful way to explore the local communities and taste the passion that goes into these beloved sweet treats. Don’t forget to grab a Donut Trail passport to collect stamps and earn a commemorative t-shirt!

Kayaking on the Great Miami River
After our sweet indulgences, we headed to Jimco’s Riverside Pizza & Kayaking in Middletown, Ohio, for some much-needed outdoor activity. Mike and I both share a deep love for kayaking and spending time immersed in nature, so this was a highlight of our trip. It was the perfect antidote to all those delicious donuts we had consumed earlier in the day.

We kayaked along a beautiful stretch of the Great Miami River. The waters were generally calm and serene, punctuated by a few gentle rapids that added just enough excitement without being intimidating. It was a wonderful balance of relaxation and mild physical challenge, suitable for most skill levels. The scenery was picturesque, offering a peaceful escape into nature. And if you find yourself hungry after working up an appetite on the water, we heard rave reviews that Jimco’s serves some of the best pizza in the area – a perfect reward for your paddling efforts!

A World of Flavors at Jungle Jim’s International Market
Later that day, we ventured to Jungle Jim’s International Market, a place that is less of a grocery store and more of an international culinary theme park. This truly is the largest and most incredible international food market I have ever encountered, making it a destination in itself. Prepare for an unforgettable shopping experience that will ignite all your senses.

With over 200,000 square feet of shopping space in each of their two locations (Fairfield and Eastgate), Jungle Jim’s boasts an astounding inventory of over 180,000 products. This includes a vast selection of intriguing items you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. From obscure spices to rare candies, they truly have it all. As soon as we stepped inside, my eyes widened in disbelief. Beyond the incredible food selection, they also house an enormous wine and beer department, offering selections from virtually every corner of the globe. You can spend hours just exploring the themed sections, marveling at the animatronics, and enjoying the unique atmosphere.

Beyond shopping, Jungle Jim’s offers guided store tours, engaging food demonstrations, and a calendar packed with events almost any day of the week. It’s an interactive wonderland for food lovers. I was particularly fascinated by the extensive hot sauce aisle, with its dizzying array of heat levels and international varieties. The vibrant section dedicated to exotic fruits and vegetables was equally captivating, showcasing produce I’d never seen before.

For seafood lovers like myself, Jungle Jim’s offers some of the freshest catches available in the entire region, a detail that truly made this seafood enthusiast very happy. If your travels bring you to Butler County, a visit to Jungle Jim’s is absolutely essential. Allocate several hours, come with an empty stomach (especially on weekends for the fantastic samples!), and prepare to discover unique foods that will expand your culinary horizons. If you’re searching for that elusive special ingredient you can’t find anywhere else, I guarantee you’ll find it here.

I particularly enjoyed the vibrant and diverse hot sauce aisle and the fascinating section dedicated to exotic fruits and vegetables. The sheer global variety was a treat for the eyes and palate.

Art and Nature at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum
After our fascinating experience at Jungle Jim’s, we made our way to Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum in Hamilton, Ohio. For anyone who appreciates the harmonious blend of art and nature, this place is an absolute dream. It’s a truly unique attraction that allows you to experience stunning sculptures and artworks set amidst incredibly beautiful, expansive grounds.

To fully appreciate the vastness of the park and its artistic treasures, we rented an “art cart,” essentially a golf cart, which allowed us to comfortably navigate the property and admire the sculptures at our own pace. This 300+ acre sculpture park is home to over 60 monumental outdoor sculptures, thoughtfully arranged within a stunning landscape of rolling hills, picturesque meadows, tranquil lakes, and winding hiking trails. It’s an ideal setting for both art appreciation and a leisurely stroll or drive through nature.

Beyond the outdoor exhibits, Pyramid Hill also boasts an impressive Ancient Sculpture Museum, showcasing artifacts from Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Syrian, and Egyptian civilizations, some dating back as far as 1550 B.C. Additionally, the Museum Gallery regularly hosts captivating exhibitions by local, regional, and national artists. It truly is the only museum where you can tour the grounds in an “Art Cart”! Attracting over 30,000 visitors annually, Pyramid Hill stands as the largest cultural tourist attraction in Butler County, offering a truly unique blend of history, contemporary art, and natural beauty.

Fresh Flavors at Indian Springs Berry Farm
Our final adventure led us to Indian Springs Berry Farm, where we had the pleasure of picking organic blackberries and engaging in a wonderful conversation with Jason, the owner, about his farming operation. Growing up, my family and I spent many summers berry picking in Michigan, so finding a place like this in Butler County was a true delight.

Whether you’re a local or visiting the Butler County area, you absolutely must experience Indian Springs Berry Farm. Firstly, the blackberries they grow are organic and, without exaggeration, some of the best I have ever tasted – plump, juicy, and bursting with natural sweetness. Learning about the incredible care and love that Jason puts into cultivating these beautiful berries was truly inspiring. The farm itself holds special meaning, as it’s the very place Jason grew up. His mother still resides there, and the thriving berry farm flourishes right in her backyard, adding a wonderfully personal touch to the whole operation.

The blackberry crop was planted just two years ago, and this year marks the first full season where visitors can enjoy the experience of picking their own. This hands-on activity isn’t just a delightful pastime for adults; it’s also a fantastic outing for children. My own kids adore going berry picking – there’s truly nothing quite like teaching them where their food comes from and allowing them to harvest it themselves.

This experience is more than just picking fruit; it’s about connecting with nature, understanding sustainable farming, and enjoying the freshest possible produce. It’s a joyful, educational activity for everyone.

There is truly nothing quite like teaching your children about where their food comes from by letting them pick it straight from the source. It’s an invaluable lesson wrapped in a fun, delicious activity.
