After a captivating week and a half exploring the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cities of Colorado, we’ve returned home with a camera full of memories and hearts full of joy. If you’ve been following my Instagram feed, you’ve already had a sneak peek into our incredible journey through Denver and the charming mountain town of Steamboat Springs. For those who haven’t, prepare to be inspired by the magic of the Centennial State, a place where adventure meets unparalleled natural beauty.
A Lifelong Love Affair with Colorado’s Mountains and Active Lifestyle
Colorado has always held a special place in my heart. Growing up, my family visited Colorado every four to five years for lively family reunions, and it was during these formative trips that I first fell deeply in love with its majestic mountains and the vibrant, active lifestyle they inspire. The sheer, untamed beauty that Colorado offers is truly unparalleled, unlike anything I have encountered elsewhere. After many years without attending a family reunion in this magnificent state, the opportunity to return arose, and I seized it without hesitation. I am incredibly grateful we decided to embark on this journey, not only to reconnect with cherished family but also to fully immerse ourselves in the splendid Colorado outdoors.
For my husband, Mike, this was his inaugural visit to Colorado. Knowing his profound love for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and rafting, I had a strong feeling he would be utterly captivated by everything Colorado has to offer. Witnessing his excitement as he explored the diverse landscapes and embraced the adventurous spirit of the state was an absolute highlight of our trip. Colorado truly is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering something for every level of adventure seeker.
Kicking Off Our Colorado Adventure in Denver: A Local’s Perspective
Our Colorado adventure began in the bustling and eclectic Denver area. We were incredibly fortunate to have my Dad’s best friend living nearby, who graciously served as our personal tour guide. Having a local insider was an invaluable experience, allowing us to discover hidden gems and authentic experiences that go beyond typical tourist attractions. He didn’t just show us amazing sites around Colorado; he also treated us to some truly delicious home-cooked meals.
One particular culinary delight that stood out was his Colombian Steak with Aji Sauce. It was so incredibly flavorful that I simply had to get the recipe, and I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be sharing it on my site very soon! Beyond the incredible food, his expertise in building fires for s’mores easily surpassed anything I’ve ever managed back home in Illinois. There’s something truly special about enjoying perfectly toasted marshmallows under the vast Colorado sky, surrounded by good company and crackling embers. These moments, both big and small, truly shaped our unforgettable Denver experience, blending urban exploration with the comforting charm of mountain life.
A Scenic Train Ride Through Colorado’s Heart
Among the many wonderful experiences, Will’s absolute favorite was embarking on a scenic train ride through the majestic Colorado mountains. This journey offered a unique perspective of the landscape, chugging along tracks that wind through deep canyons and past towering peaks. The old-fashioned charm of the train, coupled with the ever-changing panorama outside the window, created a truly unforgettable experience for him and for all of us. It was a delightful way to witness the sheer scale and raw beauty of the Rockies, a moment where time seemed to slow down, allowing us to fully appreciate the natural grandeur.
The Awe-Inspiring Beauty of Garden of the Gods
Without a doubt, one of my absolute favorite stops was the magnificent Garden of the Gods, a truly iconic natural landmark near Colorado Springs. This National Natural Landmark is renowned for its towering, reddish-orange sandstone rock formations that dramatically jut skyward. As we explored, a storm began to roll in, and the contrast of the dark, dramatic clouds against the vibrant red rocks was nothing short of breathtaking. It created an ethereal and powerful scene, making an already stunning location even more memorable. Walking through the paved and unpaved trails, surrounded by these geological wonders, offered incredible photo opportunities and a deep sense of connection to the raw power of nature. It’s a must-visit for anyone traveling through the Denver area.
A Quick Stop at the Iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Our Denver itinerary also included a quick but essential visit to Red Rocks Amphitheatre. While I was a little bummed not to catch a live show – it’s definitely a bucket list item for me – simply stepping foot into this world-renowned natural venue was an experience in itself. Carved directly into towering red sandstone formations, Red Rocks is celebrated not only for its incredible acoustics but also for its awe-inspiring geological beauty. Walking among the massive rocks and gazing at the Denver skyline in the distance, it’s easy to understand why this venue is considered sacred by musicians and concert-goers alike. It’s a testament to nature’s grandeur, perfectly harmonized with human creativity, offering stunning panoramic views even without a performance.
A Delicious Mountain Brunch to Remember
To perfectly cap off our unforgettable time in the Denver area, we indulged in a delightful brunch high up in the mountains. There’s truly nothing quite like savoring a delicious breakfast while surrounded by panoramic mountain views and breathing in the crisp, fresh alpine air. The culinary experience was elevated by the stunning natural backdrop, making it a truly immersive and relaxing end to our first leg of the trip. It was a moment of serene contemplation, appreciating the incredible journey we had already undertaken and anticipating the adventures yet to come in Colorado’s higher elevations. This mountain brunch perfectly summarized the blend of comfort and natural beauty that defines a Colorado vacation.
Scenic Drive to Steamboat Springs: Trail Ridge Road Through Rocky Mountain National Park
That was merely the beginning of our Colorado exploration. Our next destination was the picturesque Steamboat Springs, and the journey there was an adventure in itself. We opted to take the legendary Trail Ridge Road, a decision we wholeheartedly recommend to anyone traversing the state. This incredible scenic byway winds its way through the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park, offering some of the most spectacular alpine views in North America. Known as “America’s highest continuous paved road,” it ascends to elevations over 12,000 feet, where the treeline disappears and you feel like you’re on top of the world. The drive is an experience, transitioning through various ecological zones, from lush subalpine forests to stark tundra, with opportunities to spot diverse wildlife, including elk and marmots. Every turn on Trail Ridge Road unveils a new, breathtaking vista, making the entire drive an unforgettable highlight of our Colorado trip. It’s a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of the Rocky Mountains and a perfect prelude to the charm of Steamboat Springs.
Steamboat Springs: A Mountain Paradise for All Seasons
Upon arriving in Steamboat Springs, we discovered it to be the quintessential mountain town, far more than just a renowned ski resort. Its vibrant atmosphere and abundance of activities make it a perfect destination year-round. While famous for its “Champagne Powder” in winter, Steamboat Springs truly shines in the summer months, offering endless outdoor adventures. We spent a considerable amount of time hiking, exploring various trails that led us to stunning viewpoints, where we were rewarded with panoramic vistas of the Yampa Valley and surrounding peaks. The beauty of Steamboat is often attributed to the “Yampa Valley Curse,” a charming local legend that says once you experience the valley, you’ll be forever drawn back to it.
Two absolute must-do activities in Steamboat Springs are the thrilling alpine slide and a scenic gondola ride up the mountain. The alpine slide provides an exhilarating descent through the forest, a fantastic experience for both kids and adults. Meanwhile, the gondola ride offers a more serene journey, slowly ascending to the summit where you can soak in breathtaking 360-degree views of the sprawling landscape. From the top, you can truly appreciate the vastness of the Rocky Mountains. Beyond these, Steamboat also boasts natural hot springs, perfect for relaxation after a day of adventure, and a charming downtown area with unique shops and delicious eateries. Every moment in Steamboat Springs was filled with discovery and wonder, solidifying its place as a top Colorado destination.
An Unforgettable Colorado Journey
Returning home, we were undoubtedly exhausted, but our spirits were invigorated, and our memories were rich beyond anything we could have imagined. This trip to Colorado was an extraordinary blend of family time, outdoor adventure, culinary delights, and breathtaking natural beauty. From the urban charm and welcoming hospitality of Denver to the serene majesty of Rocky Mountain National Park and the vibrant, activity-filled haven of Steamboat Springs, Colorado truly offers an unparalleled travel experience.
There is an endless array of things to see and do in Colorado, catering to every interest and age group. Whether you’re seeking adrenaline-pumping outdoor sports, peaceful moments in nature, cultural exploration, or simply quality time with loved ones amidst stunning backdrops, Colorado delivers.
