Why You’ll Love These Mediterranean Falafel Sliders

There’s a reason Mediterranean cuisine is celebrated worldwide, and healthy, flavorful dishes like these Falafel Sliders are a perfect example. You might have noticed a recurring theme here at A Cedar Spoon this January, focusing on delicious plant-based Mediterranean recipes. A few days ago, we shared a recipe for a Mediterranean Hummus Bowl, and today, we’re thrilled to partner with Heinen’s to bring you another fantastic vegetarian option: Falafel Sliders with Tahini Slaw.

Falafel, a beloved staple in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean diets, is celebrated for its unique flavor and incredible versatility. Made primarily from ground chickpeas and a blend of aromatic herbs and spices, falafel patties are not only a fantastic source of plant-based protein and fiber but also naturally vegetarian, making them an excellent choice for those seeking wholesome and delicious meat-free options. In this recipe, we transform the traditional falafel into bite-sized sliders, perfect for easy handling and sharing.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and adaptability. Whether you opt for a high-quality pre-made falafel mix that you can bake at home, or prefer the rewarding process of crafting your own homemade falafel, these sliders come together with minimal effort. This makes them an ideal solution for a quick lunch, a satisfying weeknight dinner, or a vibrant, healthy appetizer for any gathering. Beyond these sliders, falafel can elevate a simple salad, add substance to a rich hummus bowl, or even be enjoyed on its own as a delightful snack. Incorporating falafel into your weekly meals is a healthy and delicious way to embrace the plant-forward principles of Mediterranean eating, keeping you feeling satisfied and full.

The Secret to Success: Zesty Tahini Slaw

While falafel undoubtedly takes center stage, the homemade tahini slaw is truly the unsung hero of these sliders, adding a crucial burst of freshness and a creamy, tangy counterpoint to the crispy falafel. Tahini, a rich paste made from ground sesame seeds, is a cornerstone of Mediterranean cooking, known for its distinctive nutty flavor and incredibly smooth texture. When combined with fresh lemon juice, pungent garlic, and a touch of water and seasoning, it transforms into a bright, zesty dressing that coats finely shredded red cabbage, creating a slaw that is both crunchy and incredibly flavorful.

This isn’t just any coleslaw; it’s a vibrant, aromatic accompaniment that perfectly balances the earthiness of the falafel. The slight bitterness of the tahini, brightened by lemon, complements the savory spices in the falafel beautifully. The crisp texture of the cabbage adds an essential textural element, providing a satisfying crunch with every bite. While we’ve crafted a quick and easy tahini slaw specifically for this recipe, you certainly have options. You could also experiment with other alternatives, such as this Healthy Coleslaw, for a slightly different, but equally delicious, experience. The vibrant colors and refreshing taste of the slaw elevate the entire dish, making each bite an unforgettable Mediterranean journey. It’s a simple addition that makes all the difference, adding depth, moisture, and a fresh zing that brings the whole slider together.

Key Ingredients for Your Mediterranean Falafel Sliders

Crafting these delectable falafel sliders requires a handful of fresh, simple ingredients, each playing a vital role in building their incredible flavor and texture. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need:

  • Falafel

The star of our show, falafel, brings a delightful crunch and savory, herbaceous flavor. You have options here: save time with a high-quality pre-made falafel mix (like Fedora Food Famous Falafel Dough for a convenient shortcut), or embark on a culinary adventure by crafting your own homemade falafel. Baking them keeps them lighter and healthier than traditional frying.

  • Slider Buns or Pita Pockets

The foundation of our slider. Soft, fluffy slider buns are perfect for a party appetizer, offering a familiar, comforting bite. Alternatively, using small pita pockets provides an authentic Mediterranean feel, creating a cozy envelope for all the delicious fillings and ensuring a less messy eating experience.

  • Fresh Tomatoes

Sliced ripe tomatoes add a burst of juicy sweetness and a touch of acidity, cutting through the richness and adding essential freshness to each bite.

  • Creamy Hummus

A creamy, smooth layer of hummus is absolutely essential. It provides a rich, earthy base that complements the falafel beautifully and adds much-needed moisture. Whether you opt for a homemade version, such as our Easy Lebanese Hummus, Lemon Hummus, or Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, or choose a premium store-bought variety (Heinen’s Original, Roasted Red Pepper, or Garlic Hummus are fantastic choices), this spread adds incredible depth.

  • Shredded Red Cabbage

The backbone of our vibrant tahini slaw. Red cabbage not only provides a beautiful pop of color to the sliders but also a satisfying, crisp texture that holds up well to the dressing and adds a fresh bite.

  • Tahini (for the slaw)

This rich, nutty sesame paste is the star of our dressing. Its distinctive flavor is key to the authentic taste of the tahini slaw, providing a creamy base and unique Mediterranean notes.

  • Lemon Juice (for the slaw)

Freshly squeezed lemon juice brightens the tahini dressing, adding a zesty tang and a burst of vibrant acidity that perfectly balances the rich tahini.

  • Garlic (for the slaw)

Minced garlic infuses the dressing with its characteristic pungent aroma and bold flavor, a non-negotiable in truly authentic Mediterranean cooking.

  • Fresh Greens

A generous layer of fresh greens, such as a mixed greens blend, romaine, spinach, or peppery arugula, introduces a welcome crunch and a boost of vibrant freshness and vital nutrients.

  • Fresh Herbs

A final garnish of fresh parsley not only adds a beautiful touch of green but also a peppery, clean flavor that elevates the overall dish and provides a professional finish.

Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Delicious Falafel Sliders

Making these falafel sliders is straightforward and enjoyable. Follow these steps to assemble your flavorful Mediterranean meal:

  1. Prepare Your Falafel: Begin by preparing your falafel patties. If using a pre-made falafel dough (such as Fedora Food Famous Falafel Dough for a convenient shortcut), carefully scoop out the desired amount and gently form them into small patties, approximately 2 inches in diameter. If you prefer to make falafel from scratch, follow your chosen recipe for homemade falafel. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup, and lightly spray it with a non-stick cooking spray. Arrange the falafel patties on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are not overcrowded, which helps them crisp up. Bake for 30 minutes, carefully flipping them halfway through to ensure even browning and crispness on all sides. Once baked, remove from the oven and allow them to cool slightly.
  2. Mix Together the Tahini Slaw: To create the vibrant tahini dressing, whisk together the tahini, water, freshly squeezed lemon juice, minced garlic, a quarter teaspoon of salt, and a pinch of black pepper in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Whisk vigorously until the mixture is smooth and creamy. If the dressing appears too thick, add a tiny bit more water, a teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired, pourable consistency. Add the shredded red cabbage to the tahini dressing and toss gently until the cabbage is evenly coated and glistening. Set this beautiful, zesty slaw aside.
  3. Assemble the Sliders or Pita Pockets: While the falafel bakes and cools, prepare your slider buns or open your pita pockets. On the bottom half of each slider bun (or inside each pita pocket if using), spread a thin, even layer of your favorite hummus. This provides a wonderfully creamy, flavorful base. Next, layer with a juicy slice of fresh tomato and a generous handful of crisp fresh greens. Follow this with a spoonful of your prepared tahini slaw, ensuring an even distribution for the best flavor balance.
  4. Final Touches and Serve: Once the baked falafel patties have cooled enough to handle comfortably, carefully place one on top of the tahini slaw layer in each slider. If you have any extra tahini sauce from making the slaw, feel free to drizzle a little more over the falafel for an extra layer of flavor and moisture before adding the top bun. Place the top half of the slider bun on top, or gently close your pita pocket. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired for an extra touch of freshness and color. Serve immediately and savor these delectable, handheld Mediterranean bites!

Customization: Make Your Falafel Sliders Uniquely Yours

One of the best aspects of these Falafel Sliders is their incredible versatility. Feel free to experiment with various additions and substitutions to tailor them to your personal taste and dietary preferences. The possibilities are vast when it comes to customizing your Mediterranean experience!

  • Beyond Hummus: Explore Dips & Spreads: The choice of spread can dramatically change the flavor profile of your sliders. While classic hummus (homemade or high-quality store-bought like Heinen’s various flavors – Roasted Red Pepper, Garlic, or Original) is a perfect match, don’t hesitate to experiment. Consider a smoky Baba Ghanoush for an eggplant-infused twist, a refreshing tzatziki sauce made with cucumber and yogurt, or even a zesty Lemon Spinach Artichoke Dip or a hearty White Bean Artichoke Dip for a richer experience. The creamy element is crucial for moisture and flavor, so pick one that excites your palate!
  • Load Up on Vibrant Vegetables: The beauty of Mediterranean cuisine lies in its abundance of fresh produce. Feel free to pile on more of your favorite veggies. Thinly sliced cucumbers add a refreshing crunch, while roasted red peppers or grilled zucchini bring a smoky sweetness. Pickled onions provide a tangy bite, and thinly sliced radishes offer a peppery zing. Don’t be shy – the more colors and textures, the better for both visual appeal and nutritional value!
  • The Salty Kick of Olives: Olives are a quintessential Mediterranean ingredient that can add a wonderful briny depth. For easier eating on a slider, finely chop Kalamata or green olives to create a sort of ‘olive relish’ or ‘salsa.’ This ensures their distinctive salty flavor is present in every bite without them rolling off the bun.
  • Greens Galore: Elevate the freshness factor with a variety of greens. Beyond a standard mixed greens blend, try peppery arugula for a subtle bitterness, tender spinach for a milder taste, or even nutrient-dense microgreens and crunchy sprouts for added texture and a gourmet touch. Each type of green offers a slightly different flavor profile.
  • Add a Cheesy Twist: While traditionally falafel is often served dairy-free, a touch of cheese can be a delightful addition for those who enjoy it. Crumbled feta cheese introduces a salty, tangy creaminess that pairs beautifully with Mediterranean flavors. Goat cheese offers a slightly more pungent and smooth texture. If you’re looking for a milder option, shredded mozzarella can also work well, especially if melted lightly.
  • Heat Things Up: For those who crave a little spice, a dash of hot sauce (like sriracha or harissa) mixed into the hummus or drizzled over the falafel can add a fantastic kick. Sliced jalapeños or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes in the slaw would also bring a welcome, fiery heat.
  • Explore Other Herbs: Beyond parsley, consider fresh mint for a cooling note, or dill for a slightly herbaceous, tangy flavor, especially in the slaw or as a garnish.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Falafel Sliders

Here are some common questions about making and enjoying falafel sliders:

  • Can I prepare falafel sliders ahead of time? While falafel is best enjoyed fresh and crispy, you can certainly prepare the falafel patties and the tahini slaw components a day in advance. Store the baked falafel in an airtight container in the refrigerator and keep the tahini slaw separate. Reheat the falafel gently in the oven or air fryer for best results just before assembling. Assemble the sliders immediately before serving to prevent the buns from getting soggy and to ensure the freshest taste and texture.
  • Are these falafel sliders suitable for a vegan diet? Yes! This recipe is inherently vegan, assuming your falafel mix and slider buns or pita bread are vegan-friendly (most are, but always check labels for hidden animal products like dairy or eggs). All the other components – hummus, fresh vegetables, and tahini slaw – are completely plant-based, making this a perfect and delicious vegan meal option.
  • What are some good side dishes to serve with falafel sliders? These falafel sliders are quite filling on their own, especially if you have a couple! However, if you’re serving them as a main meal or want to create a more expansive spread, consider pairing them with a light and refreshing side. A simple Mediterranean quinoa salad, a fresh cucumber and tomato salad, some crispy baked sweet potato fries, or a vibrant fruit salad would all complement these sliders beautifully. A bowl of Lebanese Lentil Soup would also make a hearty pairing.
  • Can I fry the falafel instead of baking it? Absolutely! Traditional falafel is deep-fried, which gives it an incredibly crispy exterior and a rich flavor. If you prefer to fry, heat about 1-2 inches of vegetable oil (like canola or grapeseed oil) in a heavy-bottomed pan to 350-375°F (175-190°C). Carefully drop the falafel patties into the hot oil and fry for 2-4 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan. Drain the fried falafel on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil. While baking offers a lighter, less oily alternative, frying is a delicious and authentic option if you’re not concerned about the extra oil.
  • Can I make this recipe gluten-free? Yes, you can! The falafel itself is typically gluten-free (made from chickpeas), but you’ll need to ensure your falafel mix or homemade recipe doesn’t contain any gluten-containing binders. The main substitution will be using gluten-free slider buns or pita bread. All other ingredients like hummus, tahini, and fresh vegetables are naturally gluten-free. Always double-check ingredient labels if you have strict gluten sensitivities.
