One of our absolute favorite stops on the Leelanau Peninsula is the iconic Fishtown in Leland. This historic district is a living testament to Michigan’s commercial fishing heritage, offering a captivating step back in time. It’s a picturesque collection of weathered fishing shanties, sturdy docks, and working fish tugs that line the Leland River, just before it empties into Lake Michigan. As you stroll along the boardwalks, you’ll see charter boats preparing for their next outing and active smokehouses producing delicious local delicacies. The air is often filled with the fresh scent of fish and the gentle sounds of the river, creating an incredibly authentic and peaceful atmosphere that is truly unique to Leland, Michigan.

The Unforgettable Village Cheese Shanty

Within Fishtown lies a culinary institution: the Village Cheese Shanty. This isn’t just a sandwich shop; it’s an experience unto itself, and truly our all-time favorite. They craft unique, incredibly delicious sandwiches that are generously sized and packed with local ingredients, offering exceptional value for your money. For any cheese enthusiast, the fact that they offer over 60 imported cheeses is reason enough to visit. Their sandwiches, especially those served on the irresistible pretzel bread, are our go-to choices. My husband consistently opts for the North Shore, while my personal favorite is the Lake Street. And you absolutely cannot leave without trying a side of their Maytag blue cheese coleslaw – it’s so unbelievably yummy, its exquisite flavor is truly beyond words!

A quick tip for first-timers: be sure to bring cash, as they don’t accept cards. You might encounter a line, especially during peak season, but I can wholeheartedly promise you that every minute of waiting is incredibly worth it for these delectable creations.

Beyond Fishtown, the village of Leland itself offers a delightful array of unique shopping opportunities and diverse restaurants, making it a perfect spot to spend an afternoon exploring.

Suttons Bay: A Lakeside Shopping & Scenic Escape

Continuing our journey northward on the Leelanau Peninsula, we arrived in Suttons Bay, another charming village that captured our hearts. This quaint lakeside town boasts a beautiful waterfront, an abundance of unique shops, excellent dining options, and breathtaking views of the bay. It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a relaxed afternoon. One store that stands out in my memory is Sensible Pearls, a lovely boutique in Suttons Bay. It’s filled with an array of wonderful items, including many vintage-inspired pieces perfect for organizing your life and home with style and elegance.

Suttons Bay also features a fantastic outdoor store, which is a joy to browse. It offers all kinds of unique and creative pieces, from garden art to decorative accents, perfect for enhancing your outdoor living space and adding a touch of Michigan charm to your home.

Northport: The Northern Tip’s Tranquil Retreat

Our final stop on the Leelanau Peninsula before heading towards the dunes was Northport, situated near the very end of the peninsula. This lovely little surf and beach town exudes a peaceful tranquility, making it an excellent spot to unwind. Whether you’re looking to spend a relaxing day on the beach, explore a few charming local shops, or simply enjoy the serene coastal atmosphere, Northport provides a refreshing escape.

Leaving the Leelanau Peninsula, we ventured towards Glen Arbor, a vibrant town serving as a perfect gateway to the renowned Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Glen Arbor itself offers a delightful mix of shopping, diverse restaurants, and access to pristine, crystal-clear blue lakes. However, the true highlight of this area is undoubtedly Sleeping Bear Dunes, a place we make sure to visit every time we are in the region.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is consistently recognized for its unparalleled natural beauty, having even been voted the “Most Beautiful Place in America” by Good Morning America. And once you experience it, you’ll understand why.

Hiking Empire Bluff: Panoramic Vistas

Our adventure began with a fantastic hike on the Empire Bluff trail. This relatively easy yet rewarding trail offers some of the most spectacular, panoramic views of the Sleeping Bear Dunes and the vast expanse of Lake Michigan. To culminate our visit, we embarked on the iconic scenic drive through the heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes. This drive offers numerous pull-offs with interpretive signs and stunning overlooks, allowing you to absorb the diverse landscapes, from dense forests to dramatic dune formations. And as the day drew to a close, we witnessed the most magnificent spectacle: a sunset over Lake Michigan at Sleeping Bear Dunes. The sky ignited with an explosion of vibrant oranges, purples, and fiery reds, painting a truly unforgettable canvas. It was a moment of pure magic, embodying everything that is truly “Pure Michigan.” These sunsets are, without a doubt, the best part of any visit to the dunes – a breathtaking culmination of natural beauty.
