Caprese Orzo Pasta Salad: A Refreshing Twist on a Classic
While many of us are already embracing the cozy flavors of fall, there’s still an abundance of beautiful late-summer produce to enjoy, especially for those with thriving gardens. My own garden is still generously providing juicy, ripe tomatoes and fragrant fresh basil, and I’m always on the lookout for innovative ways to incorporate these seasonal treasures into our meals.
Today’s recipe, the Caprese Orzo Pasta Salad, offers a delightful and satisfying twist on the beloved classic Caprese salad. Instead of the traditional slices of tomato and mozzarella, we’re introducing tender orzo pasta to create a more substantial and versatile dish. This transformation makes it an excellent choice as a standout side dish for almost any occasion, from casual potlucks and lively BBQs to elegant summer get-togethers.
One of the best aspects of this Caprese orzo salad recipe is its effortless preparation. It truly is a simple dish to throw together, which is always a significant advantage in a busy kitchen. To make it even quicker, you can easily find pre-portioned mozzarella pearls at most grocery stores. If those aren’t available, simply purchase fresh, creamy mozzarella and chop it into bite-sized pieces. The salad’s robust flavors also mean it holds up exceptionally well, making it a fantastic make-ahead option. You can prepare the main components in advance and then simply toss it with the vibrant balsamic dressing just before serving, ensuring maximum freshness and flavor.
Orzo pasta is a household favorite for us, adored for its charming small shape and delightful texture, which even our kids enjoy. It’s a versatile ingredient that features prominently in many of our go-to recipes. - EASY TO MAKE: This Caprese Orzo Pasta Salad truly excels in its simplicity and speed. You can have it ready in under 20 minutes, making it an ideal choice for busy weeknights or last-minute potluck invitations. The convenience factor is further boosted by its “make-ahead” friendly nature; prepare the salad components hours or even a day in advance, and simply add the dressing right before serving to maintain its vibrant freshness and prevent the pasta from soaking up too much liquid. It’s not just a great side; it also serves as a perfect light lunch or a sophisticated starter for entertaining, allowing you more time to enjoy your guests.
- SIMPLE, FRESH INGREDIENTS: What makes this orzo salad so irresistibly delicious is its reliance on high-quality, fresh ingredients. - FRESH BASIL LEAVES: The aromatic essence that defines Caprese.
- BALSAMIC GLAZE: An optional but highly recommended finish for a touch of sweetness and depth.
For the Zesty Balsamic Dressing:
This simple homemade dressing perfectly complements the freshness of the salad:
- EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL: The foundation of a good vinaigrette, adding richness.
- BALSAMIC VINEGAR: Provides the signature tangy and slightly sweet flavor.
- HONEY: A touch of sweetness to balance the tang of the vinegar.
- DRIED OREGANO: Adds an earthy, herbaceous note.
- GARLIC: For an essential aromatic kick.

How to Prepare Your Easy Caprese Orzo Pasta Salad
Follow these simple steps to assemble your delicious and refreshing Caprese Orzo Pasta Salad:
Step 1: Cook the Orzo: Begin by cooking your orzo pasta according to the package directions. It’s crucial to cook it to an al dente texture, meaning it should be tender but still have a slight bite. This prevents the pasta from becoming mushy in the salad. Once cooked, drain the orzo thoroughly. To quickly cool it down and prevent it from sticking together, you can run it under cold water until completely chilled. Proper cooling ensures the best texture for your pasta salad.
Step 2: Add Ingredients to Mixing Bowl: While your orzo is cooking and cooling, prepare the fresh components. Carefully chop your cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes in half. Place the halved tomatoes into a large mixing bowl. Next, add the fresh mozzarella pearls. If you couldn’t find pearls, simply chop small fresh mozzarella balls or a larger block of fresh mozzarella into small, bite-sized chunks. Finally, add the torn fresh basil leaves, which will infuse the salad with its vibrant aroma. Once the orzo is cooled, add it to the bowl with the other ingredients and toss everything gently to combine.

Step 3: Create the Dressing: In a separate mason jar or a small bowl, whisk together the ingredients for the balsamic dressing. Combine the extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey (for a hint of sweetness that perfectly cuts through the acidity of the vinegar), dried oregano, and minced garlic. Season generously with salt and pepper to taste. If using a mason jar, simply close the lid and shake vigorously until all ingredients are well combined and the dressing is emulsified. If using a bowl, whisk thoroughly until smooth.
Step 4: Toss the Salad in the Dressing: Pour the freshly prepared dressing over the pasta and fresh ingredients in the large mixing bowl. Toss everything gently but thoroughly, ensuring that every piece of orzo, every tomato, and every mozzarella pearl is coated in the flavorful dressing. Serve this vibrant salad immediately in a beautiful large salad bowl. For an extra touch of gourmet flair and a lovely visual, you can drizzle a bit of balsamic glaze over the top just before serving – this step is entirely optional but highly recommended!
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. When enjoying the salad as leftovers, I often find it benefits from a little revitalization. I’ll typically add a splash more extra virgin olive oil and a dash of balsamic vinegar, and sometimes even a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. This brightens up the flavors and brings the salad back to its fresh-from-the-kitchen peak.

Creative Ways to Customize Your Caprese Orzo Salad Recipe
This Caprese Orzo Salad is fantastic as is, but it also serves as a perfect canvas for customization. Feel free to get creative with these delicious additions and substitutions:
- Beans: Boost the protein and fiber content by incorporating your favorite beans. White beans, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), cannellini beans, baby lima beans, great northern beans, black beans, butter beans, navy beans, or kidney beans all make excellent additions, adding a creamy texture and extra substance.
- Vegetables: Enhance the nutritional value and flavor with extra veggies. Sun-dried tomatoes add an intense, concentrated sweetness; roasted red peppers bring a smoky, sweet note; thinly sliced red onion offers a sharp bite; radishes provide a peppery crunch; zucchini or artichokes add freshness; creamy avocado contributes healthy fats; and briny kalamata olives offer a delightful Mediterranean twist.
- Pasta: While orzo is wonderful, you can certainly experiment with other small to medium-sized pasta shapes that hold dressing well, such as ditalini, small shells, farfalle (bow-tie), or even a miniature penne. The key is a shape that can capture the dressing and mingle with the other ingredients.
- Pickled Vegetables: For a tangy contrast that cuts through the richness, consider adding pickled vegetables. My personal favorites are quick pickled red onions for their vibrant color and sharp flavor, or a medley of quick pickled vegetables for diverse textures and tastes.
- Nuts and Seeds: Introduce a delightful crunch and healthy fats with nuts and seeds. Toasted pine nuts are a classic pairing with basil, while slivered almonds or sunflower seeds offer a satisfying bite along with extra protein and essential nutrients.
- Greens: Transform this side dish into a more robust meal by mixing in some fresh greens. Peppery arugula complements the balsamic dressing beautifully, while tender kale or spinach add a nutritious boost and subtle earthy notes. A mixed green mixture can also provide a lovely base.
- Cheese: While mozzarella is traditional, don’t hesitate to explore other cheese options. Crumbled feta cheese or tangy goat cheese can introduce a different flavor dimension. A sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan cheese would also be a delicious addition alongside or in place of the mozzarella.
- Spices: Elevate the flavor profile with additional spices. A pinch of sumac or za’atar can add an exotic, tangy, and herbaceous Mediterranean flair. Paprika offers a mild, sweet warmth, Italian seasoning reinforces the classic flavors, red pepper flakes provide a gentle heat, and fresh or dried dill can add a unique, herbaceous brightness.
- Protein: Turn this delicious side into a complete and satisfying main course by adding your favorite cooked protein. Shredded rotisserie chicken, perfectly grilled chicken, succulent grilled shrimp, flaky salmon, or even thinly sliced grilled steak all pair wonderfully with the Caprese flavors.
- Dressing: While the traditional balsamic vinaigrette is superb, feel free to experiment with other variations. Consider using a white balsamic vinegar for a lighter color and a slightly milder, sweeter taste, or infuse your olive oil with herbs for an extra layer of flavor.

What Exactly Is Orzo Pasta?
Orzo pasta is a distinctive type of pasta that, despite its appearance, is not a grain like rice. It is made from semolina flour, which is derived from durum wheat. This particular type of wheat gives orzo its characteristic slightly golden color and a wonderfully firm, yet tender texture when cooked al dente. Its small, rice-like shape makes it incredibly versatile, perfect for absorbing flavors in soups, creating satisfying side dishes, and, of course, shining in refreshing pasta salads like this Caprese version. Orzo is a staple in many Mediterranean cuisines and offers a delightful alternative to larger pasta shapes, often proving to be a fun and easy choice for children’s meals too.

Caprese Orzo Pasta Salad

Pin
Ingredients
- 8 ounces orzo pasta {try whole wheat for a healthier version}, cooked according to package
- 2 pints cherry tomatoes, sliced in half
- 8 ounces fresh mozzarella pearls {if you can’t find the pearls you can do the small balls or you can slice fresh mozzarella into small chunks}
- 3/4 cup fresh basil, loosely packed, torn
For the dressing:
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- salt and pepper to taste
- balsamic glaze for garnish, optional
Instructions
-
Cook the orzo pasta according to the package directions until al dente. Drain well and then either allow it to cool completely at room temperature or rinse it under cold water to stop the cooking process and chill it quickly.
-
While the orzo is cooking and cooling, prepare your fresh ingredients. Slice the cherry tomatoes (or grape tomatoes) in half and add them to a large mixing bowl. Next, add the fresh mozzarella pearls. If pearls are unavailable, you can use small fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini) or simply chop a larger block of fresh mozzarella into bite-sized pieces. Finally, add the fresh basil, loosely packed and torn into smaller pieces. Once the orzo is cooled, add it to the bowl with the tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, then toss gently to combine all ingredients.
-
In a mason jar with a lid, or a small bowl, combine all the dressing ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, dried oregano, and minced garlic. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If using a jar, seal and shake vigorously until well combined and emulsified. If using a bowl, whisk thoroughly until the dressing is smooth.
-
Pour the prepared dressing over the pasta salad mixture in the large bowl. Toss everything gently but thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are evenly coated. Serve immediately. For an added touch and visual appeal, you can drizzle a small amount of balsamic glaze over the salad just before serving (this is optional).
-
Store any remaining Caprese Orzo Pasta Salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. When reheating or enjoying leftovers cold, I often find that adding a little extra olive oil and a dash more balsamic vinegar helps to refresh the flavors. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice can also brighten the dish considerably.
Notes
- This vibrant Caprese Orzo Pasta Salad is exceptionally versatile and pairs wonderfully with a variety of proteins, transforming it into a complete meal. Consider serving it alongside grilled chicken, flaky salmon, tender shrimp, or a perfectly cooked steak.
- To add an extra layer of texture and a boost of plant-based protein, try mixing in a cup of chickpeas or white beans (such as cannellini beans) into the salad. They absorb the dressing beautifully and make the salad even more filling.
- While fresh mozzarella is key for Caprese, feel free to experiment with other cheeses. Crumbled feta or tangy goat cheese would provide a delightful new flavor dimension, or a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese can enhance the savory notes alongside the mozzarella.
