My connection to Costa Rica runs deep, dating back 12 years to when I first experienced its magic as a college student studying abroad. I lived with a wonderful Costa Rican family in a quaint town just outside of San Jose, immersing myself in the local culture and language. This unique experience allowed me to explore a new corner of the country almost every weekend. One of the many incredible aspects of Costa Rica is its manageable size; you can often reach any destination in half a day or less. Of course, some of the most remote and breathtaking beaches might require a journey down unpaved, dusty roads – but trust me, these hidden gems are always worth the adventure if time permits.

Among all the incredible places my friends and I explored, Tamarindo always held a special spot in my heart. It was a place of vibrant memories, known even then for its exceptional surfing conditions and stunning, expansive beaches. My husband, Mike, and I, despite our enthusiastic attempts at surfing over the years – complete with lessons and countless board rentals – still have a long way to go to master the waves! This trip, however, allowed me to once again marvel at the incredible talent of the dedicated surfers who flock to Tamarindo’s shores, living vicariously through their impressive rides.

Tamarindo: A Blend of Old Charm and New Vibrancy

Returning to Tamarindo after more than a decade revealed a town that has evolved significantly, yet miraculously retained its core essence. The Tamarindo I knew 12 years ago was characterized by dirt roads and a scattering of humble beach bars. Today, it boasts paved streets, an abundance of diverse restaurants, and a plethora of shopping opportunities. Despite these modern developments, the fundamental elements that drew me back – the pristine beaches, the incredibly fresh food, the spectacular sunsets, and the overarching laid-back way of life – remained exactly as I remembered, untouched by time.

Embracing the Green Season: When to Visit Tamarindo

Our five-day retreat took us to Tamarindo in early May, marking the transition into Costa Rica’s “green season,” often referred to as the rainy season. While some travelers might shy away from this period, it actually offers a unique set of advantages. The crowds, which can be considerable during peak dry season, begin to dissipate, leading to more tranquil beaches and easier access to popular spots. Furthermore, prices for accommodation and activities often become more favorable. The best part? The rain typically comes in short, refreshing bursts – usually an hour at most – often in the late afternoon or overnight, leaving the mornings and early afternoons gloriously sunny. These brief showers transform the landscape into a vibrant, lush paradise, earning its fitting name as the green season.

During our stay, we found a charming bed and breakfast called 15 Love, conveniently located near the entrance of Tamarindo and right by the iconic Witches Rock Surf Camp, a fixture that was even there during my first visit years ago. Its proximity to the town and a well-known surf spot made it an ideal base for our adventures.

These brief tropical storms, far from being a deterrent, actually create some of the most dramatic and beautiful photographic opportunities. There’s nothing quite like finding a cozy happy hour spot with a cold Imperial beer in hand, watching the impressive storm clouds roll in over the Pacific. It’s an experience that truly connects you with the raw power and beauty of nature in Costa Rica.

Culinary Delights: Fresh Flavors of Costa Rica

As a passionate foodie, savoring the local cuisine is always a highlight of any trip, and Costa Rica certainly did not disappoint. Each morning at our bed and breakfast began with an exquisite spread of fresh fruit, a feast for the senses that I frequently shared on my Instagram. I became particularly enamored with the sweet, juicy mangoes, the crisp pineapple, and the vibrant, freshly squeezed papaya juice – truly a taste of heaven. This culinary inspiration was so profound that I’m already planning a smoothie recipe inspired by these incredible flavors, so stay tuned!

Beyond breakfast, Tamarindo offers a plethora of dining experiences. From casual beachfront eateries serving freshly caught seafood to charming cafes, you’ll find everything from traditional Costa Rican dishes like Gallo Pinto (rice and beans) and Casado (a plate combining rice, beans, plantains, salad, and a choice of meat or fish) to international fusion cuisine. Don’t miss the opportunity to try the local ceviche, prepared with the freshest fish and bright citrus notes.

Unwind and Explore: Tamarindo’s Pristine Beaches

With five glorious days to ourselves – a rare, kid-free luxury we still marvel at managing – Mike and I dedicated ample time to soaking up the sun and sounds of Tamarindo’s exquisite beaches. One of our absolute favorites was Playa Conchal, a true marvel where the “sand” is actually composed of millions of tiny, crushed seashells. This unique composition gives the beach a stunning, almost iridescent quality, and the water gleams with an unbelievable bright teal hue. It was, in every sense, my ideal beach paradise.

A word of advice for those venturing to Playa Conchal: accessing it requires a drive along a neighboring beach, which can sometimes be challenging depending on the tides and your vehicle. Ensure your car is suitable for navigating unpaved, sandy stretches to reach this incredible destination, but the reward is absolutely worth the effort.

While you’re enjoying the unparalleled beauty of Playa Conchal or any other beach in Tamarindo, make sure to hydrate the authentic Costa Rican way: with a fresh, chilled coconut. Forget store-bought coconut water; nothing compares to sipping straight from a coconut, a truly refreshing and natural experience. You’ll often find vendors selling them right on the beach, ready to slice one open for you on the spot.

Thrilling Adventures in the Guanacaste Region

On almost all of our vacations, Mike and I make it a point to incorporate an excursion that allows us to connect with the local environment and inject some adventure and activity into our trip. Since this was Mike’s first time experiencing the wonders of Costa Rica, we dedicated an entire day to a jam-packed schedule of exhilarating activities. Our day began with a scenic horseback ride near a majestic volcano, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. We then plunged into the excitement of tubing down a river filled with thrilling rapids, a refreshing and fun-filled experience. The adrenaline continued to pump as we ventured into ziplining, soaring through the canopy, followed by an incredible rappelling descent down a cascading waterfall – an undeniably scary but utterly awesome feat that truly tested our courage. We concluded our adventure-filled day with a well-deserved mud bath and a relaxing soak in natural hot springs, washing away the exhilaration and leaving us feeling utterly rejuvenated. It was an exhausting but perfect way to introduce Mike to the diverse and thrilling fun that Costa Rica offers.

The ziplining, in particular, stood out as one of the best I’ve ever experienced on any trip. The combination of speed, height, and the stunning natural backdrop was simply unparalleled. And descending that rock wall to the waterfall? An unforgettable moment of pushing personal boundaries amidst incredible beauty.

We rappelled down that exhilarating wall of rocks right into the refreshing spray of a waterfall, an experience that was both terrifying and utterly magnificent. It’s moments like these that make Costa Rica a true adventurer’s paradise.

Chasing Sunsets: The Daily Spectacle of Tamarindo

If you’ve followed my Instagram, you’re likely aware of my undeniable obsession with sunsets. Each one is a unique masterpiece, and I find endless beauty in capturing their fleeting splendor. Mike, perhaps with a touch more pragmatism, often jokes that after ten sunset photos, they all start to look the same. I, however, beg to differ wholeheartedly. There’s an ever-changing canvas of colors, clouds, and light that makes each sunset a distinct and magical event.

In Tamarindo, this daily spectacle becomes a ritual. We spent every single evening perched on the beach, a cold drink in hand, watching the sun dip below the Pacific horizon. The sky would ignite in fiery oranges, soft purples, and deep reds, reflecting on the ocean’s surface. This simple, shared moment of awe and tranquility was, for me, the very definition of a perfect night, a true embodiment of the Pura Vida lifestyle.

A Foodie’s Paradise: Savoring Local Cuisine

My foodie instincts were in full swing throughout our trip. I indulged in all kinds of delicious local fare, including these incredibly light and fresh Mango Fish Lettuce Wraps. They were a perfect example of the vibrant, healthy, and flavorful cuisine that abounds in Tamarindo. The emphasis on fresh ingredients, especially seafood and tropical fruits, makes every meal an adventure for the taste buds.

Of course, no tropical vacation is complete without refreshing drinks, and Tamarindo delivered! From fruity cocktails that went down a little too easily to the ubiquitous and utterly essential smoothies, there was always something to quench our thirst. On those quintessential 100-degree days, a freshly blended smoothie from one of the many local cafes hit the spot perfectly, offering a delicious escape from the heat.

The Importance of a Couples’ Retreat: Rekindling Connection

Beyond the beautiful landscapes and thrilling adventures, one of the most significant takeaways from this trip was the profound importance of Mike and I making time to get away alone. For any parents out there who haven’t had a vacation alone with their significant other in a while, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Even if it’s just for a few days, the investment in time and money away from the children is undeniably worth it for the positive impact it has on your relationship. I firmly believe that we become better, more present parents when we occasionally carve out time for ourselves and for nurturing our partnership.

In our busy lives, work, kids, and daily commitments can easily consume us, pushing our individual and relational needs to the background. It’s crucial to pause, take a deep breath, and consciously appreciate each other and the immense beauty that surrounds us. This intentional act of stepping back and reconnecting is vital for finding balance, strengthening our bond, and recharging our spirits, allowing us to return home refreshed and more engaged in all aspects of our lives.

Pura Vida: A Lasting Impression of Costa Rica

By the end of our five-day adventure, as much as I cherished every moment, I was also eagerly anticipating returning home to snuggle my children. It was, however, truly the perfect trip – a harmonious blend of relaxation, adventure, and reconnection. I hope this glimpse into our journey has conveyed even a fraction of the immense beauty and unique spirit that is Costa Rica.

From the playful monkeys swinging through the trees, often spotted even within town, to the breathtaking array of beaches, the endlessly fresh and flavorful food, and the genuinely warm, welcoming nature of its people, Costa Rica is truly one of a kind.
