My visit to Sabra was truly a dream come true. Getting to interact with the experts who craft so many delicious hummus flavors – not to mention their incredibly addictive salsas, guacamoles, and Greek yogurt dips – was an incredible learning experience. It turns out that while 75% of Americans are aware of hummus, only about 30% regularly purchase and enjoy it. This insight highlighted Sabra’s ongoing mission to bring the healthy and delicious cuisine of the Mediterranean to more people’s everyday diets, a mission that resonates deeply with me given my heritage.

The trip was packed with fascinating insights. We met with Sabra’s public relations and marketing teams, the head chef, and many dedicated individuals working in the factory. It was particularly inspiring to hear Sabra’s Executive Chef, MaryDawn Wright, discuss her creative process. She shared how she meticulously tests products and flavor combinations, drawing inspiration from diverse culinary experiences to develop hummus flavors that appeal to a wide range of palates. Her passion for quality and innovation was truly contagious.

Our morning began with an extensive taste test of all the different Sabra hummus varieties. This included a sneak peek at the then-upcoming Rosemary & Sea Salt flavor, which was incredibly delicious – I honestly couldn’t stop eating it! The Chopped Challenge: An Unexpected Adventure

After our tasting session, we were plunged into a “Chopped” style challenge in Sabra’s stunning test kitchen. With only 10 minutes, we had to create a unique hummus flavor using classic hummus as a base. As someone who usually plans recipes meticulously, this fast-paced challenge initially sent me into a momentary panic. My final creation, featuring pomegranate molasses, candied ginger, preserved Meyer lemons, topped with pine nuts, lemon zest, fresh mint and parsley, and a dash of za’atar. It was an adventurous combination that yielded seriously delicious results, proving that bold, intense flavors can truly harmonize.

The day concluded with a factory tour, a truly fascinating glimpse into large-scale food production. While photos weren’t allowed (to maintain strict hygiene standards), the insights gained were invaluable. We learned about Sabra’s rigorous process for sourcing ingredients, often from different parts of the world, always prioritizing the best quality. It reinforced their commitment to producing a superior product.

Southwestern Avocado Quinoa Salad with Chipotle Hummus Dressing is a hearty salad full of flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup quinoa, cooked
  • 1/2 red pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 orange pepper, chopped
  • 5 green onions, green parts chopped
  • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/3 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 avocado, seed removed, chopped
  • Chipotle Hummus Dressing:

  • 1/3 cup Sabra Chipotle Hummus
  • 2 Tablespoons water, {more for a thinner dressing}
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne red pepper
  • 2 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the quinoa in a small mesh strainer. Set aside. Cook the quinoa according to the package directions.
  2. While the quinoa is cooking, combine the chopped red pepper, orange pepper, green onions, black beans, fresh cilantro, and cherry tomatoes in a large bowl. Mix well and set aside.
  3. In a small separate bowl, prepare the Chipotle Hummus Dressing by combining the hummus, water, lime juice, cayenne red pepper, cumin, and a dash of salt and pepper. Whisk thoroughly until the dressing is smooth and well combined. Taste and adjust seasonings as desired. Add more water if you prefer a thinner consistency.
  4. Once the quinoa has cooled, add it to the vegetable mixture in the large bowl, along with the chopped avocado. Pour about half of the prepared dressing over the salad and gently stir to combine. Taste the salad and add more dressing to your preference.
  5. Garnish with additional fresh cilantro and green onions, then serve immediately and enjoy your flavorful Southwestern Avocado Quinoa Salad!
